Indoor Herb Container Gardening

An indoor herb container garden is a wonderful project to enjoy with your children. Kids can get a taste of gardening on a small scale. Herbs are fast growing plants so their interest won't grow cold waiting to see some change in their garden. An indoor herb garden will give your children a feeling of success and accomplishment. A love of gardening could develop because of the fun they will have growing and eating their own herbs. This article is filled with tips that will help you have a blast with your kids as you create precious memories and at the same time learn some things about nature.

Start with the Right Kind of Pot

Let your child take ownership of his indoor herb garden project by letting him choose the containers that he will plant his herbs in. Your child’s imagination can run wild when it comes to choosing a container for his herb garden. The containers must have drainage holes so the herbs won’t be left in standing water for long periods of time.

To add a little fun and imagination to your garden let your child paint terracotta planters in bright colors. Once the paint has dried, apply a clear glaze to waterproof your child’s creation and keep it fresh and looking clean.

Pick the Right Theme

Planting an herb garden with your child is more fun if you stick some guidelines. There are so many herbs available, that it can get confusing if you try to plant too many. Research the different herbs and decide if you want annual or perennial herbs for your garden. Perhaps you are interested in an herb garden with unique textures or a garden that blooms all in one color.

It can also be a lot of fun to pick a theme for your herb garden. You could plant a pizza garden that includes oregano, basil, and tomatoes. Have your child plant a medicinal garden full of things like Echinacea. Maybe you would like to plant a garden that is full of herbs that all start with the same letter like mint and marjoram.

Tend Your Indoor Herb Garden Together

Teach your children to water and feed their garden as needed. It is also important to pinch back the herbs and keep them from flowering if you want to extend their growth cycle. Make this a lesson in responsibility. Let your children learn by not automatically stepping in and taking care of the plants if they forget. Share in the harvest and take time to cook with your child, using the wonderful herbs you grew together.
